July 2009

Summer is in full swing and we hope that all our members are enjoying the weather.

Don’t forget the breakfast on Thursday, August 13, 2009.

MEMBER REPORT:

Retired Captain Jesse Watkins passed away on Wednesday, July 22, 2009.  Captain Watkins served his country in two wars and served his city as a Captain at Station 23.

Our oldest retiree, George Treadwell is at his daughters’ house in Bryceville and not doing well.

The following members are not receiving visitors but would really appreciate a card or note:

Richard Morphew has gone home:  17449 Elsinore Drive, Jax.   32226

“Fatz” Hardin is in a nursing home but would still like a card.  His home address is

1835 Woffard Ave., Jax.  32218

Max Leggett is at home.  His address is 15251 Yellow Bluff Road, Jax.   32226

Richard Tuten, Sr. (BeeMan) went to the hospital for some cardiac problems.  A stint placed in his heart and he is home and doing fine.

By the time you get this newsletter John Wood would have had another knee surgery and in rehab.  We wish him well.

We would like to thank the Daryl Dyal family for the generous contribution to this association in honor of his late father Willie Dyal.  If you have attended the funeral of a retiree lately you probably have noticed a large flag draped from Buddy Harris’ personal Snorkel.  Buddy donates time and the flag to this show of respect and honor.  The Dyal family was very appreciative to Buddy and made a donation to assure that this tradition maybe carried on.

You may have noticed Mr. Terry Pasket with Merrill Lynch at the last several breakfasts.  Terry has a deep respect for firefighters.  Terry’s father is a retired Captain from the St. Paul Minnesota Fire Department.  Terry is available to assist firefighters with all types of financial planning.  You will probably see Terry at the Thursday, August 13, 2009 breakfast.

Last month at the breakfast the by-laws and reorganization of the Widows Fund (now known as the Firefighters Death Benefit) was voted on and approved.  There will be a five (5) member Board of Directors.  If you are interested in serving on this board call Joe Smith at 955-1057 ASAP.  There will be a vote taken at the Thursday, August 13, 2009 breakfast.

As of now the Association has received only 88 Personal Information Forms.  These forms have been instrumental in honoring the last wishes of our deceased brothers.  If you have not returned your form please do so.  If you have lost yours call Linda at 630-0618 and she will make sure you have another one.  They will also be made available at the Thursday, August 13, 2009 breakfast.

At the present time we have e-mail addresses for 110 of our members.  These addresses enable us to send any urgent news such as funeral notices in a timely manner.  There are occasions when we need to notify the membership of an event before the newsletter goes out at the last of the month.  Please let us know if you have an e-mail address.

The 2009 Retired Firefighters Luncheon has been set for Tuesday, October 20, 2009 at the Firefighters’ Hall.  Please mark your calendar and plan to attend.  The air conditioner at the hall has been replaced and it really works well.

The recipe book is in full swing and we will be visiting stations in the near future to market the book.

On Friday, July 17, 2009 at the Firefighters’ Hall a banquet was given in honor of Neal Tarkington (L4).  The purpose of the banquet was to raise money to send the entire Honor Guard to Colorado Springs, CO in September at the Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service.  The JAXRFA furnished the Social Hour with beer, wine and light snacks.  All tips collected from the bar went to Debbie Tarkington and her son, Neal Jr.  Following are some pictures from the event:

IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO DONATE TO THIS CAUSE CONTACT LOCAL 122.

The JAXRFA will be sending a representative to the Memorial this year.  More information will be available at the September breakfast.
